Health & Social Care

BTEC Health and Social Care (Mrs Rodrigues)

Single Option – Level 2

BTEC First Level 1 /2 Award (equivalent to 1 GCSE grade A* - C)

This course is targeted at students who have Expected Progress (EP) targets of A* -C

This is an excellent course for students who wish to go into careers that include Nursing, Primary Teaching, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Mental Health care.

The course focuses on key knowledge and skills required to work in the Health and Social Care sector. We look at Communication, Equality and meeting individual needs. We also look at Health Promotions. You will also sit an external exam that looks at Human Development. This course does not focus on looking after children.

Whilst the course is 75% coursework based, it is recognised as being demanding in its own right. There is a heavy work load associated with the continuous assessment of coursework. Deadlines are tight and as a result the course moves with pace and rigour. Students need to motivated, have excellent time management skills and be able to work independently both in lessons and at home. They will need to undertake extended periods of time when they will be working on computers producing coursework.

Double Option - Level 1

GCSE Health and Social Care ( 1 GCSE graded A* - G)

This is targeted at students who have Expected Progress (EP) targets of grade D to G.

This course again focuses on knowledge and skills required to work in the Health and Social Care Sector. It does not focus on looking after children.

The course involves:

* An externally examined Unit on Understanding Personal Development and Relationships and counts for 40 % of the GCSE.

* A controlled assessment that is completed under controlled conditions and focuses on Exploring Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision. This counts for 60 % of the GCSE.

Students once s again need to be motivated, have excellent time management skills and be able to work independently for extended periods of time -particularly in the controlled assessment.
