DGS 'Old Girls' treat Year 8 students to illustration workshop

Posted on: 16/11/2017

Artist/Illustrator Eleanor Wong  (nee Clarke) is currently exhibiting in the Freeborn Gallery along with two other former DGS students, Charlotte Houlihan (nee Houson) and Yvette Phillips (nee McMeakin) until the end of this term.

Eleanor can be seen here working with a Yr8 Art class who are working on an illustration project. Eleanor took time out to show the girls around the ‘Old Girls’ exhibition and then discussed some examples of her work and explained how she approaches an illustration design brief. Eleanor will be working with the girls sharing ideas and inspiration during the rest of this term.

Our students clearly enjoyed working with Eleanor and gained a huge amount from the experience:

“It was great to see how drawing a simple idea can end up by being seen in a real book.”

“I found the talk really helpful: Eleanor explained how she develops a basic idea into a final illustration.”

“We have been shown how to think on the page and develop ideas through drawing and trying different ideas out – it was interesting to see Eleanor works in the same way!”

“Eleanor’s pictures are really inspirational and original. I am really glad we saw her work today and I am looking forward to working with her in class.”

“I think it’s great the way we can meet a real artist. It’s cool.”

Eleanor Wong will also be working with Yr10 Graphics students later this term and it is planned that Charlotte and Yvette will work with Yr12 students.

The ‘Old Girls’ exhibition in the Freeborn Gallery is open to the public daily during term time from 9.30am to 3pm. We are also delighted that the exhibition is open to the public through ArtsWeek this Saturday 18th November and Sunday 19th November from 11am to 5pm. Entrance to the exhibition is via Reception in St Frideswide’s building and parking in Manor Crescent car park. Please join us!
