Year 8 Options - Didcot Girls' School

Year 8 Options

At the end of Year 8, your child will be finishing their Key Stage 3 programme of study, and they will be ready to start the Key Stage 4 Curriculum. Your child will be studying for a range of qualifications (GCSEs, BTEC qualifications and/or NCFE (VCERTs) Certificates) across Years 9, 10 and 11.

GCSEs are the main national qualification at Key Stage 4, however other options are available.

For example, BTEC, NCFE (VCERTs) Certificates are also national qualifications. They are vocational courses where learning is applied to the related work sector. Whilst there is a greater focus on practical work and coursework, rather than examinations, they are recognised as being just as rigorous and demanding as traditional GCSEs.

As part of our options process, your child will need to select the option subjects they wish to study in Years 9, 10 and 11. We strongly recommend that students study a ‘broad and balanced’ group of subjects rather than specialising at GCSE, as this will provide more opportunities post-KS4.

However, as part of our advice and guidance, we are indicating to students (by personalising their option form) whether we strongly recommend they study a language and/or Geography, History and Computer Science. We would be very pleased to discuss individual choices further with students and parents, as appropriate. The most important consideration is that students take the right subjects for them and for the right reasons.

To ensure your child makes the most appropriate choices for her, we support your child in a variety of ways through this process. We offer:

  • Focused "Options" assemblies
  • One-to-one meetings with the careers advisor
  • "Taster" lessons in some new subjects
  • Support from Head of Year, Tutor and Student Manager
  • An Options Evening
  • Offer of further meetings with various pastoral staff

Key contacts throughout this process are:

  • Angela Walker – Careers Advisor
  • Mr Fulwell - Head of Year 8
  • Assistant Headteacher for Lower School
  • Miss Painting or Mrs Newey – Learning Support
  • Mr George – Head of Personal Development
  • Mrs Rodrigues – BTEC

Their personalised details can all be found under the "Contact Us" tab at the top of the website.
