Introduction
In
this unit you will investigate the large-scale use of data by
businesses, and particularly in shops. You will find out
about electronic stock control systems, including the use of bar
codes and electronic point of sale (EPOS) systems, and loyalty
cards. We will look at the social implications of loyalty cards
and EPOS systems.
We
will also explore the ways in which other organizations
collect data, the Data Protection Act, and the different ways data
can be protected from misuse or damage.
This
unit involves extensive class discussion and we will use the
internet to find information.
This
unit is expected to take approximately 3 lessons.
Lesson
1
Think
about a trip to the supermarket. How is ICT used?
You
will be asked to write down ideas in groups on this
sheet, then feed back to the rest of the class.
Focusing
on one or two things will we discuss the benefits and drawbacks to
customers and businesses.
Loyalty
cards
What
are the benefits of loyalty cards to the customer?
What
information is collected by the supermarket? (look an application
form)
How
will they store the data?
What
links this information to the card?
What
are the benefits of loyalty cards to the supermarket?
Next
we will think about the goods on the shelves.
Are
the goods priced?
Where
is the price?
How
does the supermarket know the price at the checkout?
What
are the three pieces of information stored in a bar code?
Lesson
2
The
bar codes below were
all found in my house. Copy down the numbers below the bar code
then go to this
website. Here you will be
able to find the company that
made the items and the company in which they were made. The website will
not tell you the product details - you would have to pay to get
this information. Can you guess what the products are?
| On the website, type the
barcode number in the box below the words:

A
similar system is used with books. They each have an ISBN
(International Standard Book Number). Use the Internet bookshop Amazon
to find which books have these ISBN numbers. Type the numbers into
the Search Our Shops box.

and what reasons they have for using them.

On
a piece of plain paper draw a common EFTPOS system used in a large
supermarket. Label each part of your drawing. Put the title:
