The High Sheriff Engineering Awards recognise outstanding young people in Oxfordshire who excel in Engineering, Design Technology or Resistant Materials. This year's awards were coordinated by a partnership of Lucy Group, The Engineering Trust and Abingdon & Witney College and presented by Mark Beard, the current High Sheriff for Oxfordshire, at a ceremony on June 27th.

Students were nominated by their teachers in one of four categories, with the winners of each category then in the running for the overall winner award. The standard of entries was extremely high – the judges noted the exceptional work of all the finalists and the difficulty of selecting the winners.

We are delighted that Sydnie Dougan, Year 11, was the winner in the 14 - 16 age group and was awarded a prize of £400 Amazon vouchers and a cheque of £1000 to suppport STEM at DGS.  Her project of making and programming a carbon dioxide monitor to measure indoor air quality was praised by the judges for its attention to detail and the consideration given to function and accuracy. Her enthusiasm and engineering outreach to younger girls was also commended.

At the end of the evening Sydnie was also awarded the trophy as the overall winner. Well done, Sydnie!
